Horatio Caine – character’s development

Hello, CSI maniacs. Are you ready for a new feature on the blog? Today I am going to start the cycle of characters’ biographies. Which one is your favorite CSI: Miami character? As you know, there is no movie or TV series without its main protagonist, so this time I have 12 awesome facts about Lt. Horatio Caine for you. Would you add more examples to this list?

Former career

Let’s start with some information from the time prior to joining CSI. Did you know these facts from Horatio Caine’s past?
  • Horatio Caine formerly worked as an NYPD detective, before moving to Miami where he worked as a lieutenant with the MDPD.
  • Horatio killed his own father in revenge for killing his mother.
  • In 1995, being on duty, Horatio was stabbed while investigating a case. Walter Resden collected his blood and kept it for 10 years in order to frame him for the murder of Caine’s girlfriend, Rachel Turner.


Now something about Horatio’s work for MDPD and a tidbit from his private life.
  • After his arrival in Florida, Caine joined the MDPD as a homicide detective but later transferred to the bomb squad.
  • Caine worked undercover as “John Walden” in Pensacola, Florida for sometime during the early 1990s. During this period, he dated Julia Eberlie, and the two conceived a son named Kyle of whose existence he wouldn’t have been aware for another 16 years.
  • Sometime later he returned to Miami and to being a detective. Finally, Caine promoted to lieutenant moved to the crime lab, which earned him the animosity of Sergeant Rick Stetler.
  • He became the permanent head of the lab while the former head, Megan Donner went for a leave after having witnessed the husband’s death on duty. He often confirms dedication to work with his famous saying
“We never close.”


OK, guys. We love Horatio’s Shades Of Justice, don’t we? Here is how come that he got them.
  • Caine is known for wearing sunglasses. In season 8, it is revealed that it was originally a gift from Eric Delko in 1997.


I’m sure that many of you know about the situations when Horatio was wounded on duty. Here is something about one of them, possibly the most recognizable.
  • In the last episode of season nine, Caine is shot down by Randy North, who also kidnaps Natalia Boa Vista and puts her in the trunk of a car.
  • Caine, unable to stand after the shot, attempts to stop the car with Natalia inside.
  • In the next episode, he begins to have hallucinations of Marisol saying although she is happy to see him, he must go back.
  • Against advice, he joins the team and they manage to find North to tell where Toller is. After leading him to jail he doesn’t feel good and agrees to get checked out by the doctors

Wrap up

Horatio Caine is a tough and brave cop and a very positive person. Under no circumstances does he give up on solving the murder case. On the other hand, he is shown to be a warm man who gets on well with all the children and cares about his family and friends very much. I know numerous reasons for admiring and even loving Horatio Caine, of which some are mentioned above. Tell me, what are yours?
